MCMC tells Malaysiakini: Take down videos

MCMC tells Malaysiakini: Take down videos – Note The Video Shall be Uploaded to www.Malaysiayoutube.com
The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has requested independent news portal Malaysiakini to remove two ‘provocative’ videos, including the footage of the controversial cow-head protest, from its website.

“These videos contain offensive contents with the intent to annoy any person, especially Indians.

“This is an offence under Section 211/233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998,” said monitoring and enforcement division senior acting director Abdul Halim Ahmad in a letter dated Sept 3. <a href=”http://www.malaysiakini.com/doc/mcmc_to_mkinitv.php>Letter Here

Under the communication and multimedia law, any individual found guilty of publishing content “which is indecent, obscene, false, menacing, or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any person” is liable to a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail sentence.

MCMC, a government agency under the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry, is empowered to regulate matters relating to communications and multimedia activities, including private TV and radio stations as well as Internet websites.

According to the commission, it has received “numerous complaints” on several “provocative and offensive videos” that were posted on Malaysiakini and YouTube.

The videos cited were the ‘Temple demo: Residents march with cow’s head’ and ‘Hisham: Don’t blame cow-head protesters’. The second video is on Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s meeting two days ago with the residents who staged the protest and his subsequent press conference.

Last Friday, the residents of Section 23 in Shah Alam made international news when they paraded a severed cow’s head on the city streets to protest the proposal to relocate a Hindu temple to their neighbourhood.

Some of the protesters were also seen spitting and stepping on the cow’s head, while at the same time threatening to “shed blood”. The cow is considered sacred by Hindus.

Editor: Our intention was not to offend

The protest drew flak from various quarters, including politicians from both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat. Several police reports were also lodged against the protesters.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had also expressed regret over the incident, which is being investigated by the police under the Sedition Act.

Commenting on MCMC’s request, Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan said both the videos are news events which are of public interest.

“Our intent in putting up the videos was not to ‘annoy’ anyone, but to do our job as journalists to draw attention to the protest and to ensure action is taken so that incidents like this will not happen again in Malaysia.”

Gan said that there was no plan for Malaysiakini to take down the videos and the news website was seeking legal advice on the matter.

THE MALAYSIAN MALAY

by  Dr Syed Alwi of Singapore

Dear Editor,

As you know, I am an avid watcher of Malaysian affairs. I must confess
that lately, Malaysia appears to be failing. Not a day passes by
without more events that clearly highlight Malaysia ‘s race-religion
fault-line. If things keep going this way, I fear for Malaysia ‘s
future.

Today, schools in Singapore celebrate Racial Harmony Day. I can
visibly see the joy in the children’s faces as they wear their ethnic
costumes and have fun together at school. But in Malaysia – even the
right to choose a religion has become a sensitive, national issue. No
doubt, there are many in Malaysia who hate my liberal views on Islam,
family included. But I will say what I must say openly. I have come to
the conclusion that Malaysia cannot progress any further without first
addressing fundamental questions regarding its identity and soul.
I remember the days when we can laugh at Lat’s cartoons on everyday
Malaysian life. But sadly, the Islamic tide has polarised Malaysians.
Some people ask why I should bother about Malaysian affairs since I am
a Singaporean. May I remind Malaysians that it was Tan Siew Sin who
once said that Singapore and Malaysia are Siamese Twins. Should
Malaysia go down – it would hurt the region tremendously. Especially
Singapore …

Where do you think Malay apostates would head for if Lina Joy loses
her case? Singapore of course! I find the Malaysian Malay to be very
under-exposed. For them, it’s all Islam and the NEP and everything
under the sun would sort itself out. I am sorry to say this – but
Islam and the NEP may be the cause of the undoing of the Malaysian
Malay
.

There is nothing wrong with religion or affirmative action. But, like
everything else in life, they must be taken in moderation and with a
pinch of salt. A little doubt is good. Unfortunately in Malaysia ,
emotions over Islam have overcome reason. What we see today is the
result of the NEP and Islamisation policies of the past thirty years
or so.

No one owes Malaysian Malays a living. Let me assure you that should
Malaysia fail – the Malaysian Malay will suffer enormously. And
rightly so. After all – they have been pampered with all sorts of
goodies over the years. They cannot now expect more goodies. Perhaps
the day of reckoning for them, is near. Whatever it is, Malaysia had
better wake up to the realities around her. The globalised world of
the 21st century has no NEP to offer the Malaysian Malay. And humans
cannot live by religion alone.

Regards,
Dr Syed Alwi

Blog not mine, says Rasah MP

KUALA LUMPUR: The MP for Rasah Loke Siew Fook, who has been hammered for allegedly posting seditious articles, has said the blog was not even his.
Loke, who is also DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) national chairman, said in a statement he did not know of the existence of the blog and was not aware of who was behind it.
Loke lodged a police report about the matter at the Dang Wangi police station here yesterday.
“Neither Dapsy nor I have ever issued any statements that insult Islam or the Perak royalty,” he said.
Over the past two days, blogs and SMSes had alleged that Loke had posted seditious articles on a blog sjsandteam.wordpress.com which has since been deleted.
